YHA Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden is an old market town dating back to the Middle Ages.
During the 16th and 17th century this was the center for the cultivation of saffron crocus, an activity that ended in the 18th century when the demand was reduced.

YHA Saffron Walden is located in what is claimed to be the oldest inhabited house in town. The earliest parts of the house dates from 1402. Fourteenhundreadandtwo! That was three generations, 90 years, before Columbus sailed to America and 300 years before the French Revolution! The house is 600 years old! To me, this is a breathtaking time span.

Time has left its mark in the house that is protected for it's historical values. We had the corner room on first floor, facing the main road B184 which passes  through the city. It felt like it went straight through the room though! Between us and the lorries sweeping by throughout the night, there was only a meter of pavement and a single glass window.

The floor of the room was leaning outwards, it differed 15-20 cm from the inner corner of the room to the outer. No matter how i tried not to, i still kept rolling  towards the wall during the night.
